This is our fourth summer hiring a post secondary student for a 12 week summer contract that is partly funded by Service Canada. This year we welcome Jen Freymond. Jen has come back to Lakefield after spending a year at Liberty University in the States and has a desire to serve and journey with youth. This heart has come from many years of working as a leader at Graphite Camp in Bancroft. Jen will be supervised by Duncan Freeburn (part-time as of June 1st and still working toward full-time funding). Her responsibilities will include organizing and running Art in the Barn @ Catherine Self’s House for two days a week, planning trips to Wonderland, Cobourg beach, and a camping trip, Movie Night at Isabel Morris Park, building relationships with youth, developing a place of discipleship (P.O.D), and fundraising a quarter of her salary.
New this summer is a gardening position that has been developed out of the community gardening partnerships from last summer. We did not receive the Service Canada grant we hoped would fund this position so have turned to people in the community who have a passion for this type of endeavour for funding. We have hired Rees Hamblin as our Community Gardener. He will also oversee two youth who are on a 20 hour /10 week contract from Peterborough Job Employment to assist him in maintaining and harvesting the produce. They will be working in the garden at Ridpath Junior Public School, Tracker’s Drift Farm and Education Centre, and the NEW garden at our office at 10 Hill Street. The food that is harvested will be used to help feed the youth in our programs and their families. The excess will be sold to the Nuttshell Café here in Lakefield. Rees’s attention to detail and relationship building skills will benefit him greatly in this position.
